Nadar, pseudonym for a French balloonist, journalist, novelist, caricaturist and photographer, Gaspard-Félix Tournachon. He was ordained to become the most notable photographer of France. Since his real name is too long, sticking to Nadar is better and this is what he wanted to be called. Nadar was born in Paris in April 1820.

Since Balzac believed man was incapable of making something material from an apparition—that is, creating something from nothing—he concluded that every time someone had his photograph taken, one of the spectral layers was removed from the body and transferred to the photograph.

Nadar was also the inspiration for the character of Michael Ardan in Verne's From the Earth to the Moon.
